About Ideas+Objects 22
The works in this exhibition represent the stellar achievements of this year’s graduates of the Honours Bachelor of Craft & Design Program.
Each work is the result of an immersive study by the graduate in one or more of the program’s five studios: Ceramics, Furniture, Glass, Industrial Design, and Textiles. These works show the vitality of the design process and endurance of materiality using both traditional and new methods of making and thinking.
Throughout their studies in the program, the 2022 graduates have witnessed and experienced incredible life changes and monumental world events. They have adapted and responded to these changes with great courage and fortitude.
Throughout the pandemic, many college and university students have had their entire higher education experience online. We knew that this could not be the case for our students.
Located in the AA Wing at the Trafalgar Campus, the Craft & Design studios have played host to in-person classes. From early in the morning to late in the evening, the studios have been humming with students, designing and making together while sharing new experiences, creating lasting friendships, and working collaboratively on new and exciting ideas.
I have had the pleasure of watching this group of graduates strengthen their creative voices, build their skills, express empathy, and discover a passion for design, techniques and materials. They are a group that work hard to support each other. They are funny, smart and joyful. All important things to be when working under looming deadlines.
This year, it is with great anticipation that we can exhibit their work both online and in the physical world, as so much of what our graduates do is tangible, and designed to be experienced in real life. I invite you to see the work in person between May 1-8th 2022 in the gallery at Sheridan College Hazel McCallion Campus.
I also encourage you to look through the images and process documents of the graduate’s work in this online exhibition. You can connect with the makers and designers directly. Many have posted their Instagram handles or website links. If you enjoy a graduate’s work, please follow their social media, and watch them grow as artists, craftspeople, and designers.
I would like to acknowledge our dedicated faculty and technologists in Craft & Design who go above and beyond to support the students and graduates in this program. They are among the most skilled people in their field, patiently sharing their knowledge and imparting their wisdom to our students.
I would also like to send a special thank you to the people who helped to build these exhibitions: Alex Nagy and Jamie Owen who installed the physical show at HMC, Sally McCubbin who designed this online exhibition, and Graham Gentlemen for gathering all the digital submissions in an organized way.
And of course, an extra special thank you goes to our donors. The support that each of our donors provides allows our students and graduates to keep building creative momentum and follow their passions.
Congratulations to our graduates – the newest members of our vibrant Craft and Design community. They have accomplished great things here at Sheridan College and will be sure to impress us with their next chapter.
