Dominique Marquez
BIO
Toronto-based textile designer Dominique Marquez started sewing using old clothes with a needle and thread at the age of 11, and pursued her passion of sewing through studies in college. Inspired by the manipulation of 2D fabric to fit a 3D form, she enjoys experimenting with natural dyes, screen printing, and fabric construction techniques to push her creative boundaries. Dominique values the identity that people can express through what they wear, and creates clothing that evoke feelings of confidence and joy in the people that use them.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
AS ANOTHER ME
As Another Me is a collection of two outfits which use traditional Filipino clothing in a casual and modern style. I often identify myself as a Filipino, as I was born in the Philippines, and chose to explore how Canada, the land I grew up in, influenced this identity. The idea between the two outfits is contrast, highlighting the differences between both countries. The cold and hot temperatures differ significantly between Canada and The Philippines, and this contrast is shown through material and style, where one is made with heavy-weight fabric and the other made with light-weight fabric. Where one looks covered up and layered, the other looks open and light. As Another Me tells the story of the wearers, who grew up in a land in which their native tradition and ethnicity has not influenced their growth, yet still represents who they are.
