Collin A.G Walsh
BIO
Collin is a lampworker who began working with glass in 2013. A perennial fascination with the macabre, the surreal, and the beautifully grotesque has led to a career dedicated to achieving ‘resplendence through repugnance’. Through his work, Collin hopes to provoke confrontation with uncomfortable, often visceral emotions in order to confront deep seated biases and promote conversations about sensitive topics like illness and disability. Collin hopes to continue his studies at the graduate level and ultimately work professionally as an artifacts conservator, with research interests including historical representations of grotesques in the crafts, and the sociocultural significance of grotesque objects.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
BEAUTIFULLY GROTESQUE: THE ETHNOGRAPHIC HISTORY OF DISGUST & ACHIEVING RESPLENDENCE THROUGH REPUGNANCE
The works herein showcase choice examples of ‘resplendence through repugnance’ from antiquity reinterpreted in flameworked glass. Blended with an intent to inform their audience of my own struggles with the impact of disability, I invite you to join me in this journey through the history of disgust as a visual language. May these objects serve faithfully as love letters to the aesthetics and emotions that have inspired myself and so many throughout time to put pen to paper, brush to canvas, and breath to sand in order to share our love of the grotesque with the world and her ages.
