Wade Vienneau
BIO
Wade Vienneau took his first pottery class after leaving a stressful job in IT. He found the time spent at a community pottery studio enriching and fell in love with the process of working with clay and the community which supported the local artists. His curiosity brought him to join different associations where he met many influential people who shaped the way he thought about clay. He attended Haliburton School of The Arts, successfully completed a four-month intensive ceramics program. Wade took his knowledge with him on posting to Mozambique where he consulted with the Art Department at the American International School in Mozambique. His stay in Africa influenced his understanding of craft at the foundational level as he met many makers from different African countries and learned how important craft was culturally, socially, and economically. Upon returning to Canada Wade attended Sheridan College where he obtained his Bachelor of Craft and Design.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
BECOMING A MAKER
The life of a craftsperson is the personal expression and constant exploration of form, surface, and process. The materiality of clay is endlessly fascinating to me. Understanding balance, line, and repetition highlights my examination of natural interruptions, denoting flow and natural movement within my vessels. Considering my vessel’s surfaces to ensure continuity and rhythm in form and decoration are key elements of my aesthetic. Building towards refined and well-crafted work will take the rest of my life. Working with clay and fire within contemporary aesthetics is the very essence of what I do and where I want my journey as a craftsperson to go. Creating vessels and objects that people would like to use in their homes but also gives them a sense of wonder and reflection is what I strive towards. This year has been a continuing journey to develop my skills as a craftsperson.
