Zheyin Xiao
BIO
Zheyin (Shirley) Xiao is a textile artist who stitches first and asks permission never. Hand weaving, embroidery, patchwork, dyeing, and a little digital chaos—she uses it all. Her work lives on tapestries, scarves, fabric forms, and interior pieces that look like they’re having fun. Think wonky, colorful, touchable. Inspired by travel, snacks, and random happy thoughts. No seriousness. Just thread with personality.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
STRATA
This project explores identity as a layered and evolving experience through textile and fashion design. Based on my experience of living between China and Canada, it examines how memory, culture, and the body shape a changing sense of self.
Using silk threads, satin, and chiffon, I apply techniques such as digital printing, embroidery, and layering to translate imagery into wearable forms. Motifs like willow branches and maple leaves create a dialogue between different cultural contexts.
The final garments emphasize structure, movement, and touch, allowing identity to be experienced physically through material and form.
