David Lewis
BIO
David Austin Lewis is a designer and fabricator currently based in Toronto, Canada. His work focuses on formal representations of pattern, rhythm, repetition and continuity as informed by studies in architecture and music. Through synthesizing manual and digital methods of design and fabrication, David creates impactful forms with technical and gestural qualities and offers a new perspective on traditional studio practice in our current industrial context. Working mostly with solid wood and sheet goods, David creates work that seeks to invoke tactile performances of the built environment.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
SHEET MUSIC
"Sheet Music" is a human-scale structural system of scored sheet materials inspired by indeterminacy in both architecture and music. This system was conceptualized as a mosaic of moments, similar to graphic music scores, intended to invoke tactile interpretative performances.
When unfolded, the structure frames and augments views within a space with unique perforations and mirrors while also providing various surfaces for the display of goods. While the generative exercises for this project involved mostly handcraft with various paper and wood sheet materials, the final prototype was cut almost entirely on the CNC exclusively out of Baltic birch plywood. The structure incorporates modularity to allow for a variety of uses and arrangements; sheets within the system can either be linked together or stand on their own with accompanying staves.
"Sheet Music" represents my devotion to exploration in craft and iterative processes. This project was a culmination of skills I developed over four years in the Craft and Design program at Sheridan College. While I hope that users and observers discover the functionality that is scored into the piece, I embrace any unforeseen interpretations of the work - as is customary with any indeterminate composition.
