Ezekiel James
BIO
Ezekiel James is a Toronto-based textile artist. His upbringing in the west-end has deeply informed his methods of creating, seeking to find physical representation in the correlation between memory, identity and the environment itself.
Working primarily through collage and digital weaving, Ezekiel explores the evocative and textural nature of lived spaces. The woven nature of his work looks at the melding and decay of memory, and through collage he addresses the collision of cultures, architecture and history that takes place within Toronto.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
REDAMANCY
Redamancy explores the idea of fragmented memory, and how textural imagery can evoke haptic-related memory through it's cataloguing and combination. Images collide with each other, creating skewed perspectives and unreal architecture hearkening back to Toronto’s overwhelming nature when viewed through the lens of childhood.
By also changing the medium in which these textures appear, Redamancy seeks to re-inform others about the perceived cold or uncaring nature of big cities. In becoming a woven piece these fragments of the city are closer aligned to a blanket or shawl, something that is known for being an object that brings both warmth and comfort. This change in material also brings with it the fragility, as the piece continues to degrade and fray as time passes, much like memory.
