Jacquelin Vouk
BIO
Jacquelin Vouk is a tapestry weaver based in the GTA known for her vibrant colours and designs. Vouk spent her childhood summers in King’s Landing Historical Village, New Brunswick and learned many textile disciplines that continue to inspire her work today. She believes that quality and patience is key to beautiful, long-lasting works of craft art. She mixes these historical sources of inspiration with contemporary theory and style from tapestry designers such as Jean Lurçat and Chrissie Freeth. Leaning into an abstract cartoon style, Vouk aims to make craft and art objects that put the 'fun' back in 'functional'.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
VANITY AND OTHER SMALL SINS
This piece is an abstract self portrait done with tapestry and mirrors, made as a wall hanging. I am depicted as a sitting figure with no facial features other than one large eye, which is a small mirror shaped to fit the eye socket.
I want a viewer to feel that they are pulled into a private moment between the piece, the viewer, and the viewer’s reflection. Looking at yourself in the mirror for a long time is an action that is usually very private – I want to bring that personal act into a more public space. The core concepts driving this work are ‘others observing my observation of myself’ and ‘come stare into your own vanity’.
