Mickey Wang
BIO
Mickey Wang aims to bring unique and intriguing solutions to everyday problems. Often iterating designs with the help of digital manufacturing, his work often rapidly goes back and forth between digital and physical iterations to arrive at the optimal result.
Mickey grew up a curious and inventive child, having been obsessed with construction toys from childhood all the way up until digital modeling and 3D printing was within reach. With a fervent drive to design and build solutions to problems —functional or aesthetic— his designs are a blend of pragmatic practicality and a sometimes intriguingly eccentric appearance.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
STOWAWAY COLLAPSIBLE CYCLING HELMET
Stowaway is a helmet that provides convenience to commuting cyclists by being able to collapse into a form factor perfect for bags, totes, and briefcases.
Each year, hundreds of cyclists are fatally injured in accidents and tens of thousands more suffer head trauma and concussions. However, almost 2/3 of these cases could have been prevented had the cyclist worn a helmet.
Through an abundance of primary research, in the form of observation, surveys, and interviews, it was determined that especially among bike share users and casual cyclists, the storage bulk and incompatibility with their commuter gear was the main reason helmets weren't worn.
The goal of the project was to create a helmet that respected the storage space and carrying capacity of a cycling commuter, in a simple-to-manufacture design in order to encourage helmet use among those who don't, and reduce the inconveniences for the cyclists that do.
