Sienna Csunyoscka
BIO
Sienna Csunyoscka (she/they) was raised in both Toronto and various Australian cities. Sienna is a queer textile artist, nature-lover, reader, poet, former dancer, and trapeze artist. They grew up camping and experiencing urban adventures, where they became a loving friend to both humans and bees, generating a curiosity for the natural world and making ever since.
Sienna loves weaving recycled materials to reconnect to nature and community- people, landscapes, and fellow beings. Sienna is currently based in Toronto and a graduate of the Bachelor of Craft and Design program at Sheridan College.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
SOLAS
My project focuses on native bees and their nests, to communicate their vital role in our ecosystems as endangered pollinators. This project acknowledges our relationship between living in cities and losing habitats, which endangers bee biodiversity and harms ecological balance overall.
These textiles echo natural bee nests using basket making techniques such as coiling and twining with natural, often recycled materials. I am converting the effects of my experience of solastalgia- ecological grief- to honour bees already gone and presently alive into the process of making this body of work.
When I was 11 years old, I witnessed swarms of honeybees around where I lived, in Toronto and Melbourne. This led to growing my awareness of another being and their home, and a reverence for bees. In exploring the idea of home, the project encourages a culture of unlearning disconnection from nature, by reconnecting through textiles and our local ecosystems.
