Zihao Xiong
BIO
Zihao Xiong was born in a city built in mountains in China and grew up in a modern society while surrounded by the beauty of nature. To date, his accomplishments at Sheridan have given him the opportunity to be a summer resident at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto, a student representative for the Glass Art Association of Canada, as well as receiving the Sheridan International Bachelor Degree Scholarships and awards.
His works focused on the concepts of self-expression and examination of identity, using the temperance and fragility of glass to highlight the difference between inner truth and external perceived identity.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
SELF-EXPRESSION
My works focused on the development of the concept of self-expression. This idea totally originated from a work I did unconsciously in my first year and my self-reflection afterwards. Also, this work has become the prototype of my subsequent series of works and the starting point of the whole concept of my theory behind my work. Self-expression, a seemingly simple concept, is actually very complicated. It involves a lot of related sub-concepts and covers a wide range of fields of research, like sociology, psychology and philosophy. This researching process is also exploring and developing how to visualize and express my invisible “self” in my body of work.
I firmly believe that my soul and mind should not be trapped by any measuring media. They should grow and spread willfully and transcend “me” to infinity. However, the invisible thought is always bound by the tangible body. While the body is the foundation of the thought, what binds you will eventually support you. This series of works indicate my dialectical views on restraint and freedom.
