Declan Birkenheier
BIO
Born in Toronto, Canada, I am a woodworker and designer focused on patternmaking and the way surface texture affects such patterns. During my youth I lived on a sailboat where my parents homeschool my brother and I so we could travel and learn from the world. This unique experience of days at sea and life in close quarters, has fueled a desire to enhance the spaces within smaller dwellings. My work is a reflection of this by adding enjoyment where the mundane resides, challenging the lines between adornment and utilitarianism.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
MOSIE 444 MILKING STOOL
As a response to the shrinking of living spaces I will challenge the line between objects functionality and aesthetic qualities. Using patterned blanks such that the surface of each piece will be adorned with a graphic quality. This blend of visual arts and fine craftsmanship will add enjoyment and interest into everyday dwellings, where the luxury of extra space is unobtainable.
