Hannah Johnson
BIO
Born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, Hannah Johnson is an emerging ceramic artist. Her work explores the parallels between the vessel and the person, and how the collection and containment of our daily lives accumulate and form us into the people we are. Beginning in the fall of 2022, Hannah will be pursuing her MFA as a candidate of the Ceramics MFA program at Kent State University, in Kent, Ohio. Prior to attending Sheridan for Ceramics, Hannah obtained a Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Accounting, in 2016 from the University of Guelph.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
A FUNCTION OF TIME
As vessels collect and contain, so too do people collect and contain experiences and memories. I am interested in how the accumulation and repetition of daily life shapes us, and whether upon self-reflection these events fall into patterns within our own minds.
With my practice rooted in the vessel, identifiable functional forms are abstracted yet maintain the image of a vessel that collects and contains. These forms allow for the exploration of the internal volume and its relationship to containment, as well as the volume’s interaction and relation to the surface. Colour applied over texture and the repetition of form, accumulate and build layers, acting as a record of the passing of time and the building of experience.
Indiscriminate collecting interests me; we all collect and contain our experiences, both ordinary and extraordinary. Ultimately, how do we craft our own sense of identity from these personal collections?
