Tiffany (Jill) Sookdeo
BIO
Jill is an emerging textiles artist that explores personal experiences and hard topics through a combination of mediums and textiles, like acrylic paint, crepe paper, and fabric. They use a variety of semiotics through material choices, iconography, and colour styles to express deeper connections in their work.
They have a Diploma in Visual Creative Arts, as well as the recent graduation from the Bachelors of Craft and Design Program majoring in Textiles from Sheridan College. They hope to continue exploring textiles and mixed media in the future.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
STRAP ON HARNESS AND FAERIE CIRCLE
Full Circle: Faeries Congregate in Flowers is a self-reflective installation composed of crepe paper and fabric flowers and a retro-reflective fabric strap-on harness. I researched themes from Feminism such as gender equality, gendered violence, LGBTQ+ history, sexual trauma, and recovery as well as floriography from the present and Victorian eras.
This research contributed to design elements for symbolism through colour, flower choice, and material metaphors within the garden and harness.
I researched these things because I wanted to express parts of my journey of recovery and my own queer pride as well as talk about some hard social issues through my capstone.
Full Circle: Faeries congregate in Flowers is me confronting these uncomfortable experiences of gender violence and homophobic experiences and turning them into a more positive experience for myself, through embracing my queerness and reclaiming my sexuality.
