Riley Turner

BIO

Riley Turner is a furniture designer and maker from Edmonton, Alberta currently residing in Toronto. His work is filled with bright colors that evoke a playful but contemporary aesthetic. Inspired most often through film from directors such as Hayao Miyazaki and Wes Anderson, Riley often finds himself using woven forms to convey the bright and childlike stylings to his designs. Similar to how these inspirations deal with heavy themes through the lenses of childhood and vibrancy.

CAPSTONE PROJECT

RETURN TO COLOR

Return to Color is an exploration of the process of healing. How a once desaturated world filled with gray shifted to one filled with the vibrancy and saturation I saw as a youth. Therapy helped me switch my perspective from the throes of depression. This project sought to analyze the thought records written and display them in furniture. The collection displays the soft repetition of daily tasks I do to check in on myself such as mediation, as well as the repetitive consumption of Studio Ghibli films that were often the only source of color informing the color palettes.
