Claudia Rose Pinheiro
BIO
Claudia Rose Pinheiro is a textile artist from Niagara Falls, currently working in the GTA. She is connected to her craft through a family history of seamstresses, lace-makers and embroiderers, and was raised in an environment rich in love expressed through handwork. She is interested in the preciousness of handmade things, cloth as inheritance and the immense labor of historical functional textiles. She explores these themes using natural dye printing, expressive stitch and weaving. By combining, layering and constantly reusing materials, Claudia is able to invoke palimpsests of memory, love and human experience.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
YOU CAN'T COME BACK
You Can’t Come Back is an installation that explores memory decay, grief and inheritance through natural dye polychromatic printing, weaving and hand embellishment. The symbols within the work, such as birds, shrouded figures, angels and telephone lines are fragments of the artist’s memory which she uses as tools to depict a layered, decaying matrix of memory. The structure of the installation is meant to invoke a kitchen window above a sink with a rug to stand on, which the artist considers a site of constant loving, memorial iteration. You are invited to experience the work as a space of contemplation.
