David Laurin
BIO
David Laurin is a craftman based in co-called Ontario. He is interested in the legacy of craft labour, how it influenced Modernist design and the craft labourers who came before him. Primarily a woodworker, David finds meaning in making objects and the iteration process. Be it a piece of wooden furniture, a mug thrown of a potters wheel or a macrame wall hanging, he is always busy with a project.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
A ROUGH POETRY
A Rough Poetry is a collection of objects, mostly furniture designed in a brutalist style. It takes a stance against the "less is more" strain of Modernism by being part of a lineage of Socialist Modernism. The bench, lamp and rug collection creates a space where people can be together and imagine a new, and better world.
"Brutalism tries to face up to a mass-production society. And drag a rough poetry out of the confused and powerful forces which are at work”- Alison Smithson
