Nicole Werker
BIO
Nicole (b.1997) is a designer and maker from Toronto. Interested in emotional worlds and the ways in which the environments we inhabit influence us, she attained a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Toronto Metropolitan University in 2020. A love for object, furniture and domestic design practices led her to pursue the Honours Bachelor of Craft and Design Sheridan College specializing in furniture. In her current practice, Nicole combines everyday typologies with elements of modernist sculpture and the North American studio craft movement. Working is primarily in wood, she investigates the intangible and physical aspects of objects. Most recently engaging with metal, her work is informed by experimental material research.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
FAILURE OF THE PRESSURE TECHNIQUE
Failure of the Pressure Technique is a body of work that investigates stories of feelings, memory and desire, and the furniture we sit on to tell them. Responding to the history of the chaise lounge, specifically its presence in Freud’s practice of psychoanalysis, the project is interested in how a single piece of furniture blurs the lines of comfort, domestic life, intimacy, illness, and healing. The outcome of this project is an environment for disclosure. A place for people to share their own emotional worlds, parts of themselves that live under the surface of our day to day. It is something intimate, but not necessarily serene or pure or always serious. In this space, I nod to the act of free associative speech and I invite people to lay down and talk.
