Ian is a furniture designer and maker from Burlington, Ontario. Drawing on his inspiration from automotive and streamlined design, Ian is always seeking new ways to incorporate innovative processes and materials in his work, thinking outside of the box (literally) to create organic, flowing forms which defy traditional furniture conventions.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
COMPUTER DESK
I've always been inspired by the streamlined forms of aircraft and automotive design and sought to carry this aesthetic language into furniture. I've been particularly interested in the idea of how a slick, streamlined shell can conceal its underlying supportive framework and mechanical components, such as the engine in the case of a car.
How the form of that shell is shaped by and interacts with these underlying mechanical fixtures, and how it could transform to reveal them is a concept which I seek to emulate with my computer desk. The computer processing hardware within is like its engine, and the shell panels can transform to reveal this, like the hood of a car or cowling of an aircraft.
