BIO

Nicki Franek is a textile artist that is based in Toronto. Though Nicki loves to explore a multitude of techniques when creating, much of her work reflects a focus on form and texture, using non-traditional material investigations combined with construction techniques such as weaving, knitting, crocheting, or knotting. Nicki is also a keen investigator of colour and colour relationships, resulting in work that is often marked by a rich and varying colour palette.

Nicki is drawn to topics that explore human behaviour, psychology, and the human relationship to nature. By using her work to explore macro, universal themes in more personal ways, Nicki’s work aims to connect to the collective human experience, while always staying true to her own lived experience.

CAPSTONE PROJECT

DEATH FEEDING LIFE

Mother nature has a role for everything. Decay and deterioration is no different. In fact, decay holds the most important role in creating new life. Within this body of work I explored the meaning of aging and death through the process of decay. Decay became both my aesthetic muse, as well as my technical adviser. The result is a 3’x4’ woven banner, made from silk steel thread, and treated with devoré to burn out an image of a deteriorating maple leaf. It is an ode to decay. A celebration of the process that keeps life here on earth moving forward. With this banner, I honour deterioration to give ourselves the permission to honour our own aging bodies. To allow us to find value, acceptance, and happiness in a body that transforms so very much over time. What is the price of devaluing our own inevitable decline? What are we missing out on in doing so?
