CAPSTONE PROJECT
NILOU GHAEMI
Clay is a shapeshifting material, both fragile and seemingly everlasting, ideal for exploring ideas and experiences around decay, ephemerality and memory. My work as a graphic designer prior to pursuing ceramics influences my creation and production processes. I utilize a multidisciplinary approach using drawn elements and digitally-manipulated photographs to create a scaffold for the surface treatment of the work. My sculptural ceramic works capture the internal reflection on relationships with the self and others. The work is created by pulling imagery from photographs and transforming them through the textures of raw clay and colour. My work is an amalgamation of perceived reality and fantasy, dissolving boundaries between time and space, memory and myth, belonging and estrangement.
