CAPSTONE PROJECT

THE INTER-LIFE

My piece, the Inter-Life, draws on Egyptian hieroglyphs & religious iconography, to attempt to understand & find common themes about the Afterlife within the Abrahamic religions. The piece looks to the cosmos for these answers.

The 36” x 52” wall-piece was initially inspired from an Islamic prayer rug, known as a Janamaz in Urdu. The grey monk’s cloth is polychromatic printed first for the cosmic background. Next, it is screen printed with metallic pigment & neon pigment. Then, the Phosphorescent pigment is hand-painted on for the stars & symbols to achieve the glow in the dark effect with the black lights.

This combination of differing techniques is used together to achieve the variation needed for a piece trying to depict a difficult idea to grasp, or even explain, for the human mind to comprehend while inviting the viewer to interact & feel the piece.
