Garrett Joyce
BIO
Garrett Joyce is a furniture maker from Kingston, Ontario. He developed an interest for woodworking in high school and came to Sheridan to develop his skills and passion. A man of few words he enjoys the physical aspect of craft, working directly with the material and machines. His work tends towards practical designs focused on function and the needs of a client often featuring some colour or curves. Along with solid wood Garrett works with paracord and other weaving materials to create surfaces, bracelets, and add colour.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
SITTING WITH ADDICTION
Addiction is something that I suffer from and struggle with. I created Sitting With Addiction as I wanted to explore and express the feelings I have on addiction through my chosen craft of furniture. This piece uses upholstery and ergonomics to represent that struggle both the comfort you can find in addiction as well as the difficulty to separate from it. Beyond being an expression of my feelings this piece is meant to encourage reflection and understanding having you “sit with addiction” in a more literal way.
