Viktoria Shirk
BIO
Viktoria is an emerging textile artist whose work takes heavy inspiration from the great outdoors. Growing up she was always encouraged to do what made her happy, this consisted of a hands-on art approach in painting, drawing, photography, and knitting. After high school she initially pursued an interior decorating program, it was here that she discovered her love of textiles and just how much could be communicated through touch alone. Looking to find a more hands-on approach she began her journey in completing the craft and design program focusing on textiles.
CAPSTONE PROJECT
THE ART OF CAMPING
The Art of Camping is a collection of memories shown through felted painted rocks, some rocks have scenes needle felted on with naturally dyed wool that reflects different parks that Viktoria has visited on camping trips that illicit positive memories. The images are replicated using watercolour techniques to help create a base for a more abstract and blurry vision, true to how some memories fade over time. The main structure of the image is there, and though some of the finer details are lost, the memory as a whole is not forgotten. The juxtaposition of the source object: rocks; a heavy, dense, and cold presence to the lightweight, soft, and squishy feeling of wool felt is intended to encourage viewers to want to interact with the work and understand the comfort that these landscapes bring to the artist.
