CAPSTONE PROJECT

THE HOCKEY RAVE JERSEY

They say it takes a village to achieve a goal. In the case of The Hockey Rave Jersey, that saying is an understatement. In this work, Landon Carletti uses the iconic status of the hockey jersey to represent and celebrate how his experience of being in the Hockey, Queer and Rave communities have shaped him into who he is today. The experience of being made by 3 such different worlds led him to highlight the contrasting differences while also examining what makes them similar. When viewing this piece, Landon urges the viewer to think about the word community and the experience of emotion in humans across identities. The Hockey Rave Jersey comes into the world at a time when transgender existence is fighting to be seen, accepted and respected, not just in sports, but on a fundamental level of simply wanting to belong in community.

Madison Casalino

BIO

Madison Casalino is an avid natural dyer and fibre artist from Burlington, ON. Her interest in natural colours and fibres was piqued during her time at Sheridan, spending her summer breaks on her porch filing mason jars with local plants to test new and exciting botanical colours. Wool remains her favourite material to work with, admiring it for its texture, warmth, sustainability, compatibility with natural colours, and its myriad of applications. Her love of pastel colour, especially pinks, blues and orange, reflect her carefree nature and desire to inspire joy to combat the increasing bleakness of the current social climate.

EPHEMERAL

Ephemeral is a naturally dyed patchwork jacket that focuses on transitivity and the threatened diversity of Ontario’s native plant species. Natural dyes, biodegradable materials and spring blooms all exhibit delicate beauty that fades away over exposure to time and the elements. The work conveys this delicacy using soft spring colours made with botanicals such as cochineal, indigo and marigold, fine silk embroidery and soft woven wool all wrapped up in the warm embrace of a jacket. The native blooms depicted on the jacket highlight the importance of maintaining Ontario’s biodiversity and the dangers of planting invasive species.

CAPSTONE PROJECT

THE RED OCEAN

The Red Ocean is a project inspired by the human impact of the late Rococo era fashion and industrial revolution, expressing the designers' unease with the current warming and acidification of the oceans in terms of the relationship between human activity and ocean health. The project contains elements such as rococo fashion, waves and sea life, lung vessels with tumors and face masks. Through them, the designer wants to express that human activities are affecting the ocean and the planet as the center, and to tell people that the ocean is sick. Thus, people are urged to pay attention to the ocean's warming and acidification, and to form an awareness of ocean protection.

CAPSTONE PROJECT

I'M FINE

I’m Fine (but please don’t look through the gaps in my armor) is two interconnecting pieces that represent the artists healing process through sexual assault trauma. The first layer is machine stitched threads onto dissolvable fabric to create a lace-like cobweb of threads with various densities. Behind the threads is a quilted piece made of cyanotypes and screen prints with various images of organs, hands, and the body. The screenprinted images mimic the style of the cyanotype as a way to represent the feeling of desperation the artist often experienced within their healing journey when they felt like they had to return back to “normal” to be healed.

Kayleigh Marshall

BIO

Kayleigh is a textile artist and cosplayer born in Ontario, Canada. How her interest in textiles developed was a bit of a roller coaster ride. When she finished high school she initially went into engineering because she had an interest in science and making things. Over the course of four years she switched between different engineering streams trying to find a topic she enjoyed. In late 2018 she was diagnosed with lupus. It was this that forced her to slow her life down and take a look at things in a different way. During this time she realized engineering was not something that was going to make her happy in the long run, so she started looking at programs way outside of what she knew. This combined with her newly discovered love of costuming led her to the Textile program at Sheridan College. She immediately fell in love with the program. This project is the culmination of her journey to find her place in our world.

CAPSTONE PROJECT

FINGERPRINT OF THE EARTH

Fingerprint of the Earth is a textile piece exploring the similarities between rock and fabric. In our world there is a process happening right beneath our feet known as geologic folding. Tectonic plates floating on magma crash into each other with a huge amount of force. This force is enough to bend even rocks. The result of this process are rocks containing beautiful patterns and layers. This folding in the rocks can be mimicked using folding of fabric. Geologic folding is a process that most people are unaware of. The purpose of this project is to bring attention to this force of nature that is changing our planet every day. These two things that seem so different at a glance, may not actually be that different at all.

CAPSTONE PROJECT

THE SWEET ESCAPE

"the sweet escape” by Natalie Nasrallah is a series of wall-hangings that touch the idea of a “happy place” when in mental distress. Natalie’s “happy place” is a meadow that she thinks of (escapes to) whenever dealing with her anxiety and depression.

This perception of a meadow is inspired by Porter Robinson’s Nurture album art. The Nurture vinyl sits on a floating shelf in Natalie’s living room. She looks at it every day and wishes she can be transported to a place as peaceful as that album cover.

the sweet escape is created with a colour palette based on research in colour psychology. These colours are shown to trigger positive feelings, thoughts, and emotions. She uses sewing techniques such as quilting and patching to emphasize the feeling of safety in this meadow. Through the sweet escape, Natalie hopes that viewers can feel comfort and peace.

CAPSTONE PROJECT

FLIPPERS AND FLORALS

This wall hanging explores my happy memories on both the East and West coasts of Canada. I use photographs I took of flowers during the summers I spent working in the Halifax Public Gardens as well as flowers I saw in Vancouver this past summer.

I also include seal imagery as I was always fascinated by the seals in Nova Scotia and even more excited when I saw Vancouver had seals as well. My project explores the cycle of life of these elements. Flowers bloom and die as seasons pass but these photographs hold the perfect memory of each of their short lives.

Digitally printed images of the flowers are printed on fabric and structured with wire. They were then combined with large naturally dyed fabric stuffed seals: two mothers and two pups. All elements are thoughtfully appliquéd to a hand manipulated background which gives an illusion of a fantasy world.

Viktoria Shirk

BIO

Viktoria is an emerging textile artist whose work takes heavy inspiration from the great outdoors. Growing up she was always encouraged to do what made her happy, this consisted of a hands-on art approach in painting, drawing, photography, and knitting. After high school she initially pursued an interior decorating program, it was here that she discovered her love of textiles and just how much could be communicated through touch alone. Looking to find a more hands-on approach she began her journey in completing the craft and design program focusing on textiles.

CAPSTONE PROJECT

THE ART OF CAMPING

The Art of Camping is a collection of memories shown through felted painted rocks, some rocks have scenes needle felted on with naturally dyed wool that reflects different parks that Viktoria has visited on camping trips that illicit positive memories. The images are replicated using watercolour techniques to help create a base for a more abstract and blurry vision, true to how some memories fade over time. The main structure of the image is there, and though some of the finer details are lost, the memory as a whole is not forgotten. The juxtaposition of the source object: rocks; a heavy, dense, and cold presence to the lightweight, soft, and squishy feeling of wool felt is intended to encourage viewers to want to interact with the work and understand the comfort that these landscapes bring to the artist.
